Walt Whitman

Walt Whitman was an American poet, essayist, and journalist, born on May 31, 1819, in West Hills, Long Island, New York. He is best known for his collection of poems entitled "Leaves of Grass," which is considered a groundbreaking work of American literature. Whitman grew up in a family of modest means and received little formal education. He began his career as a printer's apprentice and later worked as a teacher, journalist, and editor for various newspapers in New York and Brooklyn. In 1855, Whitman self-published the first edition of "Leaves of Grass," which included twelve poems. The book was notable for its free verse style, which eschewed traditional rhyme and meter, and its celebration of the beauty and dignity of everyday life. Whitman continued to revise and expand the book throughout his life, ultimately producing several different editions that included hundreds of poems. Whitman's work was controversial in its time, both for its unconventional style and for its frank treatment of sexuality and other taboo topics. However, it also attracted a loyal following, and many critics now consider Whitman to be one of the greatest poets in the English language. In addition to his poetry, Whitman was also known for his journalism and essays, which dealt with a wide range of social and political issues, including slavery, democracy, and the nature of American identity. He was a passionate advocate for the abolition of slavery and was active in the Civil War, working as a nurse and visiting soldiers in hospitals. Whitman's health began to decline in the 1870s, and he suffered a stroke in 1888 that left him partially paralyzed. He continued to write and publish until his death on March 26, 1892, at the age of 72. Today, Whitman is widely regarded as one of the most important figures in American literature. His work continues to inspire and challenge readers with its celebration of democracy, diversity, and the beauty of the natural world.
